Winds up and so are the risks
Published Thu 25 Jun 2020
Winter is here, the air has cooled, and the sea breezes have disappeared.
During winter months, many areas around Australia tend to see frontal weather conditions; they are often stronger and more unpredictable.
At Kiteboarding Australia, we take safety to the extreme so here are a few techniques to help you kite safely this winter.
Before you get to the beach check the weather forecast and wind reports.
The Bureau of Meteorology is the national weather forecasting service around Australia. Get familiar with your local forecast and live wind readings to ensure the conditions are suitable for your equipment and ability.
If in doubt don't go out – make sure the weather is safe.
If the weather forecast is safe, it's time to check your equipment
Before heading out, check:
- Flying lines for any significant fraying or cuts in the lines
- Safety system for any malfunctions (If something goes wrong this needs to work seamlessly)
- The canopy for any holes or wear and tear, and
- Pump your kite up and check your kite for slow leaks
Fixing your equipment before you go out will save you lots of heartache down the track.
It's time to choose a suitable beach
Winter winds may mean you are kiting at a different beach or dealing with different wind angles. Make sure that your site is suitable, check:
- What’s downwind of the launch area
- What’s upwind of the launch area (for air turbulence)
- Wind direction suitability, is this wind onshore? and
- Is the beach clear of hard objects?
A good location will make your session safe and fun.
Kite with a buddy or with support around you
Launching and landing is often the time when accidents happen. Ensuring you have support around to help launch and land will improve safety significantly. Don't be afraid to ask for help, kiters are a friendly bunch and happy to help.
One last thing... Make sure you are covered in the event of an accident!

But most of all have fun and enjoy your session!

Good winds and safe kiteboarding!
