Australian Kitefoiling Championships set to kick off this Friday

The 2020 Australian Kitefoiling Championships are kicking off this Friday (17th of January, 2020) at Brighton Beach, Victoria as part of Sail Melbourne International. Recently included for the Paris 2024 Olympics, this exciting discipline is the future of Olympic racing. The inclusion in the 2024 Olympic is an exciting step forward for kiteboarders and will showcase the fun & exciting sport to audiences right around the world.

Kitefoilers can reach speeds between 60 & 70 km per hour and will light up Brighton Beach between the 17th and 21st of January 2020.

On day 1 the event will test the proposed 2024 Olympic format. This will involve a pair of kitefoilers completing a course individually in a relay style format.  

Racing in the fleet is defending National champion Breianna Whitehead who finished 5th in the world rankings in 2019. Breianna will be looking to defend her title against the likes of Natalie Clarke who finished 13th in the world rankings. Both Breianna and Natalie represented Australia at the World Beach Games in Dohar, 2019.

In the mens division Scott Whitehead will be setting his sights on his first National Title after managing 2nd in the previous championships. Scott will be racing against a strong fleet of riders from right around Australia.

The National Championship will be held over 5 days with up to 6 races per day (1 - 6pm), meaning there will be plenty of on water action for both competitors and spectators alike. The event is free for spectators and Brighton Beach will make a great place to view all the action throughout the 5 day event.
