Kiteboarding Western Australia is hosting a series of junior freestyle progression sessions, starting from the 18th of September, for junior riders under 15 years. The sessions help juniors to develop the skills and confidence required to be a great kiter. Riders can expect small friendly groups - limited to eight participants - with expert coaching from national champion, Duotone rider, and physiotherapist, Daniel Anderson.
Purpose of the Sessions
The sessions help juniors to develop the freestyle skills and confidence required to be a skilled kiter. The sessions will cover topics of strength/conditioning, injury prevention, mental skills for training, goal setting, and will offer cross-training opportunities. The progressions sessions are the first step to bring juniors from basic to the advanced freestyle level.
The Session Program
Due to insurance purposes, only KWA members will be able to participate. A signup fee of $120 will be charged for the seven-week program until the 20th of November.
The sessions will be wind-dependent and the dates of the clinics may change based on the forecast. The decision on which day the course will be run will be made by 5pm every Monday, athletes, and parents will be informed in advance.
Progression Sessions Plan
Sat 18 Sept 3pm - Pre-Season Kick Off
Location: Applecross Foreshore
- Introduction of athletes & intro to junior development program.
- Athletes’ goals and strengths (athletes to complete questionnaire prior to event, form will be sent via email).
- Strength/fitness assessment by physiotherapist and coach Daniel Anderson to assist with injury prevention and development. Athletes will set up their own program with ongoing guidance.
- BBQ and get together ~ 5.30pm - 8pm, food and drinks provided.

Woodman’s Point
Wet: Progression Session - Freestyle and Big Air
Dry: Fitness/injury prevention session & mental skills – how to analyse and break down tricks & self-confidence (positive self-talk). Location: Powell Reserve, Coogee.
Thu 21 Oct 4pm – 6pm
Bounce Trampoline Park
Dry: Cross-training @ Bounce in Cannington with special guest Shannon Ducker - National Freestyle Champion, Gymnastics coach and Ninja Warrior Competitor. Skills body awareness and confidence
Sat 23 Oct 3pm – 5pm
Safety Bay - The Pond (Meet outside WA Surf)
Wet: Progression Session. Freestyle and Big Air.
Dry: Mental skills, visualisation and kite bar training, plus injury prevention/fitness session) Location: Powell Reserve, Coogee.
Thu 28 Oct 4pm – 6pm
Woodman’s Point
Wet: Progression Session. Freestyle and Big Air.
Dry: Fitness/injury prevention session & mental skills, competition training, and routine
Thu, 4 Nov 4pm – 6pm
Perth Wake Park
Wet: Progression Session, Perth Wake Park (Dan) with wake pros.
Sat 13 Nov 2:30pm – 5:30pm
Safety Bay - The Pond (Meet outside WA Surf)
Wet: Progressions Session - Freestyle and Big Air
Dry: Yoga/stretching and breathing techniques. Mental Skills regulation up/down techniques and when to use these.
Sat 20 Nov 2pm-6pm
Safety Bay - The Pond (Meet outside WA Surf)
Wet & Dry: Freestyle and Big Air. Wrap-up development, and mid-season fitness check day. Recap goals/fun sessions with coaching. How far has fitness and technical level progressed since 18 September.
